Dog Age Calculator: Dog Years to Human Years

How old your dog is in life stages and in human years — built from the sources that actually exist, which turned out not to be the ones everyone cites.

All 155 breeds from the study, each with its own measured median — not a size bucket wearing a breed name.

"But how old is that in human years?"

There is exactly one peer-reviewed answer to that question, and it comes with a caveat its own authors wrote.

From DNA methylation in 104 dogs, primarily Labrador retrievers, aged 0.1–16 years. The authors state plainly that "distinct breeds exhibiting widely varying lifespans could yield different age-translation functions" — so this number takes no account of your dog's size, and applying it to a Chihuahua goes beyond what the study claims.

We went to check the sources, and they weren't there

Building this calculator was supposed to be simple. Take the standard dog age chart — 15 human years for the first year, +9 for the second, then +4 to +6.5 per year depending on size — cite the AVMA and the AAHA like everyone else, ship it.

Then we read the documents. The AAHA Canine Life Stage Guidelines, the single most-cited source for that table, does not contain it. Searching the full text for "human years" returns nothing at all. What it does contain is a direct refusal:

"For practical purposes, rather than attempt to calculate age equivalents to humans, the task force suggests that life stage be defined both by age and characteristics (Table 1). Life stage divisions, although arbitrary, provide a framework for creating individualized plans for preventive care specific to each dog's needs at the appropriate time."

Read that twice. The task force didn't merely omit a conversion — it considered the idea and rejected it. And it calls even its own life stage divisions "arbitrary". That is a body being careful about what it does and doesn't know. The chart circulating under its name is the opposite: four decimal-place-precise coefficients with nothing underneath them.

The AVMA doesn't publish the coefficients either. It publishes lifespan ranges by size — and, for what it's worth, its page debunks the × 7 rule in the same breath that other sites use it to justify a chart. Even the size bands don't match: AVMA uses under-20/20–50/50–90/over-90 lb, while the folk table uses ≤20/21–50/51–100/over-100. It looks like the table borrowed AVMA's lifespan bands, mutated the cutoffs, and repurposed them as aging coefficients AVMA never wrote.

We could not trace the coefficients to any primary source. Different sites also use different numbers for the same buckets — +4/+5/+6/+7 is just as common as +4/+5/+5.5/+6.5 — so we keep that chart separate from the sourced life-stage and lifespan model.

One thing worth knowing if you go checking yourself: searching the web will confirm the myth. AI search summaries confidently state that the AVMA publishes these coefficients, complete with a citation. The citation points at a page that doesn't say it. The only thing that breaks the loop is opening the primary document — which is also, we suspect, exactly how this table got into hundreds of sites in the first place.

So what do we use?

Life stage, from AAHA. Puppy, young adult, mature adult, senior — defined by developmental milestones and by proportion of lifespan, exactly as the guidelines set out. Senior is the last 25% of expected life.

Lifespan, from McMillan et al. (2024). AAHA's definition needs a lifespan number and deliberately doesn't supply one. We use the largest study available: 584,734 UK dogs, peer-reviewed, with confidence intervals — and we use its full 155-breed table, extracted from the paper's own supplementary data file (CC BY 4.0), so your dog gets its breed's measured median rather than a size bucket wearing a breed name. Notably we do not use the AVMA's lifespan figures. That page attributes them to an American Kennel Club expert-advice article, but publishes no methodology, sample size or underlying study — and they're markedly pessimistic, putting small dogs at 8–11 years where a 584,734-dog study measures a median of 12.7. An attributed figure still isn't a measured one.

Human years, from Wang et al. (2020) — kept deliberately separate. It's the one peer-reviewed conversion that exists, and it's honest about its limits: 104 dogs, mostly Labradors. We report it as Wang's number with Wang's caveat rather than blending it into a stage model, because blending them would be doing the exact thing AAHA declined to do.

The finding that should change these calculators

Every dog age calculator asks how big your dog is. In McMillan's data, muzzle shape mattered more:

That bottom row is the whole argument. Grouping dogs by size tells you almost nothing — 0.8 years separates the size classes. Grouping them by breed spans ten years. Size is a lossy compression of breed, and every calculator that asks "small, medium or large?" is throwing away the signal before it starts.

So we ask for the breed and use its own measured median, from all 155 in the study. The size and muzzle options are there as a fallback for when we don't have your breed — not as the main event.

One caution: the intuitive reading is not the measured one. Long muzzles are not best. Long-muzzled breeds come in at 12.1 years, behind medium-muzzled at 12.8. The familiar "small long-nosed dogs live longest" claim comes from a particular combination — small-and-long-muzzled reach 13.3 — not from long muzzles winning on their own.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a dog's age in human years?
We separate two things: life stage, from veterinary guidelines, and human-year conversion, from the one peer-reviewed methylation formula. That formula is human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31, from Wang et al. (2020). It was built from 104 dogs that were primarily Labrador retrievers, and its authors note that other breeds "could yield different age-translation functions", so we label it as Wang's estimate rather than blending it into the life-stage model.
Isn't there a standard dog age chart by size?
There's a very widely copied one: 15 human years for year one, +9 for year two, then +4/+5/+5.5/+6.5 per year depending on size. It's usually credited to the AVMA or the AAHA. We fetched and read both documents, and neither contains it. The AAHA Canine Life Stage Guidelines have zero mentions of "human years" and say the opposite — that "rather than attempt to calculate age equivalents to humans", life stage should be defined by age and characteristics. The AVMA publishes lifespan by size, not aging coefficients, and debunks the × 7 rule. Different sites also use different coefficients (+4/+5/+6/+7 is common too) for the same buckets. A real standard doesn't come in variants.
Do big dogs really age faster?
Somewhat — far less than the popular tables imply. The largest study to date (McMillan et al., 2024, 584,734 dogs) found median lifespans of 12.7 years for small breeds, 12.5 for medium, and 11.9 for large. That's a spread of about ten months. The folk table implies large dogs age roughly 60% faster than small ones for their whole lives. The size effect is real, and it is nothing like that big.
What matters more than size?
Muzzle shape, on the evidence of that same study. Flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds had a median lifespan of 11.2 years versus 12.8 for medium-muzzled breeds — a gap twice the size of the entire small-to-large difference. Medium-sized flat-faced breeds showed a 2.69-fold higher rate of death than small long-muzzled ones (median 9.4 vs 13.3 years). Our calculator asks about it. As far as we can tell, no other dog age calculator does.
Do long-nosed dogs live the longest?
No — and this is a genuine trap, because the intuitive version is wrong. In McMillan's data, medium-muzzled breeds (12.8 years) outlive long-muzzled ones (12.1). Flat-faced breeds are last at 11.2. The widely-repeated "small long-nosed dogs live longest" line comes from a specific combination — small-and-dolichocephalic breeds reach 13.3 years — not from long muzzles being better on their own. We mention it because we nearly got it wrong ourselves.
When is my dog a senior?
AAHA defines senior as the last 25% of estimated lifespan — a proportion, not a birthday. Using McMillan's medians that lands around 9.5 years for a small dog, 9.4 for a medium, 8.9 for a large one, and earlier for flat-faced breeds. Senior is a cue to change monitoring — twice-yearly check-ups rather than annual — not a diagnosis. Most dogs entering it are perfectly healthy. There's more in our senior dog guide.
Why does the size dropdown not ask my dog's weight?
Because the study's size classes have no weight thresholds. McMillan takes small/medium/large from Kennel Club and FCI breed lists — size is a property of the breed, not of the animal in front of you. An overweight Beagle is still a small breed. We could invent a kilogram cutoff to make the form feel tidier, but it wouldn't correspond to anything in the data, so we don't.
Where do the breed lifespans come from?
All 155 breeds come from the supplementary data table of McMillan et al. (2024), released under CC BY 4.0 — each with its own measured median, confidence interval, hazard ratio and sample size. We extracted it from the paper's own file rather than retyping numbers from a blog post, and cross-checked ten of them against the figures quoted in the paper's results text. As far as we can tell, no other dog age calculator publishes this table.
Which breeds live the longest and shortest?
In the study's 155 breeds, the shortest median lifespans were Caucasian Shepherd Dog (5.4 years), Presa Canario (7.7) and Cane Corso (8.1) — all giant guardian breeds. The longest were Lancashire Heeler (15.4), Tibetan Spaniel (15.2) and Shiba Inu (14.6). That's a spread of ten years between breeds, against just 0.8 years between the size classes. Breed is a far better question than size, which is why we ask it first.
